Closest Approach of Mars 2018 & Total Eclipse on July 28th

  • The date of closest approach of Mars will be July 31st. This will be the closest approach since 2003.
  • Mars is already shining brighter than Jupiter these days. Watch out for larger and brighter red planet Mars this summer.
  • You can easily find Mars around and after 22:00. Please set time appropriately when using Sky Viewer.
  • On July 28th, there will be a Total Lunar Eclipse. While in Japan, total eclipse will be in the dawn, you can still enjoy the spectacular show by the eclipsing Moon and the larger and brighter red planet.
